Duas For Pregnancy: A Guide for Expectant Mothers

Pregnancy is a profound journey filled with anticipation, hope, and sometimes anxiety. For many Muslim women, turning to their faith for comfort and guidance is an integral part of this life-changing experience. Frequently reciting duas (supplications) and Surahs from the Quran play a crucial role in seeking Allah’s blessings and protection during pregnancy and childbirth. Indeed, this connection can be particularly comforting during this time, helping to alleviate fears and concerns about the health and well-being of both the mother and the unborn child.

Although there aren’t any specific duas for pregnancy in Islam, here we will share some powerful duas and surahs that are particularly beneficial during pregnancy and childbirth to help bring about ease and protect the mother and child from harm.

Essential Duas for Pregnancy

1. Dua for Pious Children

This heartfelt dua appears in Surah Al-Imran (3:38) and was made by Prophet Zakariya (peace be upon him) when he wanted a child. This beautiful supplication should be recited in abundance by those seeking a pious and healthy child.

Transliteration: Rabbi hab lee mil ladunka d’urriyyatan t’ayyibah innaka samee-u’d du-a’aa

Translation: My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.

2. Duas for Protection from Harm

During pregnancy, it is essential to seek Allah’s protection for the unborn child. A recommended dua which is particularly powerful for protection against evil influences and harm is:

Transliteration: A’udhu bi kalimaat-illaahit-taammah min kulli shaytaanin, wa haammah, wa min kulli ‛aynin laammah

Translation: I seek refuge for you both in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous pest and from every harmful eye.

Reciting the three Quls regularly can provide protection and peace. These surahs are very powerful and are recited to seek Allah’s protection from all forms of evil and harm.

Abdullah ibn Khubayb reported: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, “Speak.” I said, “What should I say?” The Prophet said, “Say: He is Allah, the One, (112:1) and the two chapters of refuge, al-Falaq and al-Nas, every evening and morning three times. They will be enough for you against everything.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhii, 3,575)

Surah Nas

Transliteration: Qul a’oodhu birabbin naas, Malikin naas, Ilaahin naas, Min sharril waswaasil khannaas, Alladhee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin naas, Minal jinnati wannaas

Translation: Say, I seek protection of the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of the darkening night when it settles, and from the evil of the blowers in knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies.

Surah Falaq

Transliteration: Qul a’oodhu bi rabbil-falaq, Min sharri maa khalaq, Wa min sharri ghaasiqin idhaa waqab, Wa min sharrin-naffaa-saati fil ‘uqad, Wa min sharri haasidin idhaa hasad

Translation: I seek refuge with the Lord of the Dawn, From the mischief of created things, From the mischief of Darkness as it overspreads, From the mischief of those who practise secret arts And from the mischief of the envious one as he practices envy.

Surah Ikhlaas

Transliteration: Qul huwa’llaahu ahad, Allahu’s-samad, Lam yalid wa lam yoolad, Wa lam yakul-lahoo kufuwan ahad

Translation: Say: He is Allah, the One and Only, Allah, the Eternal, Absolute, He begetteth not, nor is He begotten, And there is none like unto Him

3. Dua for Ease

As the time of delivery approaches, many women turn to the dua of Prophet Yunus (AS) for ease and relief. This is because when Prophet Yunus (AS) was in the belly of the whale, in darkness and distress, he turned to Allah (SWT). In his vulnerable and desperate state, he humbled himself and drew closer to Allah, who responded to his call and freed him. Likewise, during the anxiety and pain of childbirth, you should turn to Allah (SWT) as only He can help you.

Translation: There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.

Transliteration: Laaa ilaaha illaaa Anta Subhaanaka innee kuntu minaz dhaalimeen

4. Dua for Forgiveness

In Islam, the most comprehensive dua for forgiveness known as the “Master Istighfar” or “Sayyidul Istighfar” is a powerful supplication seeking Allah’s forgiveness. Frequently asking Allah for forgiveness is a proven way to facilitate ease in all of your affairs – including your pregnancy and the birth of your child.

Translation: O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no deity but You. You created me, and I am Your servant, and I abide by Your covenant and promise as best as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for indeed none forgives sins except You.
